What are Free Radicals?

Free radicals are atoms/molecules that are very unstable and react easily with cellular structures around them because they contain unpaired electrons. They steal electrons through a process called oxidation, damaging the cell’s DNA, proteins, lipids, and cell membranes in the process (“oxidative damage”). This can eventually kill the damaged cells, and like a chain reaction, can turn those damaged cells into free radicals themselves, and damaging other healthy cells.

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage caused by free radicals. They are molecules that can safely interact with free radicals and neutralize them before vital molecules are damaged.

There are 2 types of antioxidants:
1) Endogenous (internal) antioxidants: the body makes its own antioxidants to neutralize free radicals.
2) Exogenous (external) antioxidants: outside sources such as dietary supplements.

Exogenous (External) Antioxidants

Most people are aware of dietary antioxidants. There are thousands of them; the common ones are vitamins A, C, and E, lycopene, and beta-carotene. Whole fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are also all rich in antioxidants and their helper molecules, helping protect against many diseases. It is more important to eat plenty of foods rich in antioxidants as we get older because our body’s nature defenses against free radicals diminish as we age. However, proper diet alone will eventually be insufficient, and that’s where jiaogulan comes in.

The presence of increased levels of exogenous antioxidants has shown to prevent the types of free radical damage associated with cancer developments in animal studies. according to the National Cancer Institute.

Endogenous (Internal) Antioxidants

You probably didn’t know that endogenous antioxidants are you body’s natural and primary defense against free radicals. The 5 types of antioxidants produced by the body are: superoxide dismatuse (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), catalase (CAT), alpha lipoic acid (ALA), and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Endogenous antioxidants much more powerful than any diet antioxidants available; unfortunately, our ability to produce them decreases with age.

No natural and effective ways of increasing superoxide dismatuse (SOD) levels had been found until the discovery of jiaogulan. The second important endogenous antioxidant produced in your body is glutathione peroxidase (Gpx). It helps prevent cell damage by neutralizing free radicals and maintaining dietary antioxidants in their active forms so that they can keep fighting free radicals. Gpx detoxifies the body by binding to pesticides, heavy metals, and other toxins until they are excreted. Gpx also regulates protein and DNA synthesis and cell growth, and helps your immune system fight infections and prevent cancer. It also decreases muscle damage, reduces recovery time, increases strength and endurance, and shifts metabolism from fat production to muscle development during physical functions.
